About ubcool2
A slang dictionary that reports what it finds, says where words came from, and helps you pick the right words for the room.
We report; we don't rule
Slang belongs to the people who speak it, not to a dictionary. Nobody gets to be the final authority on what a word "really" means. So every entry is a report: our best understanding of where a word started, when it caught on, and how it's used now. When people who know better tell us we're wrong, we fix it.
How entries are made
- Drafted with AI help. The first version of every entry was drafted by an AI model (Claude, made by Anthropic) from what it learned in training, then organized here. That means mistakes are likely, especially in exact dates.
- Dates are approximate. "First in common use" is our best estimate of when a word took off. "Earliest print or record" is the earliest written source we know of, which is usually later than when people actually started saying it. Spoken slang is almost always older than its first written appearance.
- Origins can be disputed. When scholars disagree, entries say so.
- People check them over time. As entries get checked against real sources, their status changes.
What the status labels mean
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| reported | Drafted from research notes; not yet checked by a person against a source. Every entry starts here. |
| verified | A person checked it against at least one real source, listed in the entry. |
| corrected | Changed because of a reader report. The entry's "Changes" list says what changed. |
| disputed (N open) | Readers have sent reports about this entry that haven't been reviewed yet. |
Contesting or correcting an entry
Open any word and tap Contest or correct this. You can say what's wrong, what it should say, where you're from, and link a source. To add a word we're missing, use Suggest a missing word on the main page.
Reports go into a review queue for a person to read. Nothing on the site changes automatically, so nobody can vandalize an entry. An entry with open reports shows a "disputed" label so readers know someone has questioned it.
What we don't include
- Slurs of any kind, including reclaimed ones.
- Explicit sexual slang. This site is meant to be safe for teens.
- Words are included because people use them, not because we approve of them. Words tied to violence, gangs, or drugs are flagged with warnings.
Privacy
- No accounts, no ads, no tracking scripts, no cookies.
- When you send a report, we store what you typed. We don't store your IP address. To slow down spam, we keep a scrambled one-way code of it, which can't be turned back into the address.
- Contact info is optional and only used to reply about your report.
